Supper with the Spirits

So skip ahead 400 years to the 1900's, tonight we will sup with the St. Augustine spirits of that gilded age in St. Augustine.

Guests will arrive at 6:30 P. M. through the beautiful Fountain of Youth gates and proceed to the spring house for a sip of the youth giving waters and a, more palatable, glass of wine.

As the guests enjoy the wine and mingle, the atmosphere changes, it is suddenly 1906 as the flamboyant Luella Day Mc Connell sashays onto the property; introduces herself to the guests as Diamond 'Lil, and the fascinating story begins. Just how did this girl from the Klondike come to create and operate her Fountain of Youth tourist attraction in St. Augustine Florida in the early 1900's? The story is told by Diamond 'Lil in her own outrageous Barnum and Bailey fashion. Her life as a gold mine owner, a physician, a perceived relative of Napoleon Bonaparte and wife of a husband she claimed had died, several times.

After her elaborate, charmingly self indulgent explanation 'Lil will seat her guests at 7:30 for their plated dinner. The candlelit, linen covered tables will be set with a chilled salad, hot breads, butter and carafes of red and white wine. The candles are flickering; in the background soft guitar music is playing as the main course is efficiently served by white coated servers. The choices are a chicken dish, a pork tenderloin marsasla and a pasta dish, all served with vegetables of the season.

The tables are cleared, desserts and coffees are being served, and suddenly another woman appears from nowhere. Could she be a contemporary of Diamond 'Lil? No, this woman seems distraught, looking for something. Could it be Ida Alice Shords Flagler, the second wife of millionaire developer, builder and Standard Oil founder Henry M. Flagler? Perhaps she is looking for her wayward husband, to catch a glimpse of the young woman he is known to spoon with on these balmy moonlit evenings. Disheveled but determined, it is evident she has been here before in the dark and quiet, looking, looking, looking. Tonight however, you are here!
